With a Canray Fontenot smile and a Canray cap, young Cedric Watson, from San Felipe, Texas, was properly outfitted to join 88-year-old
Alphonse "Bois Sec" Ardoin in playing some of the songs that, performed by
Bois Sec and his late music partner of some 55 years, became musical
treasures of the Creole tradition. With them on guitar was James Adams,
another Texas musician whose radio program got Cedric interested in Creole
fiddling and who has helped him along the way. The performance, sponsored by
Louisiana Folk Roots April 25, 2004, at Festival International in Lafayette,
was hosted by Herman Fuselier. Bois Sec stayed around to watch his grandson
Dexter Ardoin play on the same stage, even as clouds gathered and a
terrific rainstorm ensued. It was hard for Mr. Bois Sec to live up to his
nickname in that weather, but, as the photos further down the page show, he
was ready the next weekend to play on stage with Dexter at the Breaux Bridge
Crawfish Festival.
