The 19th annual Zydeco Food Drive at El
Sido's Zydeco and Blues Club in Lafayette was held November 16,
2005. In the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the event
was even more special this year, an occasion to reaffirm our
commitment to one another as we work to rebuild Louisiana and
help citizens in the devastated regions begin a long process of
recovering.
Don “Apollo” Wilson, a
founder and organizer of the event, served as the emcee. Sid
Williams, owner of El Sido's, introduced the first performer,
Buckwheat Zydeco (shown at left), and also expressed his thanks
throughout the evening to all of the musicians who donated their
time and talent. Representatives from the office of Lieutenant
Governor Mitch Landrieu presented plaques to the musicians in
appreciation for their generosity.
As the host of the
annual event for almost two decades, Sid Williams is known
throughout Southwest Louisiana and beyond as a man who works
tirelessly on behalf of the community and the culture.
According to Herman Fuselier's account in The Daily
Advertiser, each year the event provides food for some 7,500
people as well as hundreds of toys for children.
Photos on this page
were taken between 7:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.. The event was still
going strong at 12:30, but those of us who had to return to
Eunice and get up at 5 a.m. to get ready for work Thursday could
not remain for the finale. |
